Institution of SEB Medals
Society of Ethnobotanists (SEB) was established during 1980 for the promotion of multifarious potentialities and the prospects of Ethnobotany.
Medals: For the promotion of Ethnobotany and to encourage the R&D studies on this very important aspect, the Society of Ethnobotanists established Medal Awards. In the first instance, the Society established two Medal Awards annually from 1992 with the help of generous donations by some Life Members, particularly Dr. H. Fugiwara of Japan. The Medals have been named after J.W. Harshberger (who first gave term Ethnobotany in 1895) and E.K. Janaki Ammal (who first initiated and promoted organised study of Ethnobotany in India in middle of 20th century). The SEB introduced third medal award in 1998; fourth in 2006, fifth in 2012, and sixth medal award in 2014. At present six medals are awarded every alternate year. Besides, one award established by the publisher of the Journal ‘Ethnobotany’ on the occasion of silver jubilee i.e. 25th vol., for best single authored paper.
Note: During the year 2009 in Executive Meeting of SEB, it was decided that the SEB Medals will be awarded every alternate year due to rising costs and selection of better candidates.
- Unsuccessful nominations will be continued for two more chances subject to other eligibility considerations.
- There will be no distinction between developed & undeveloped country for any medal.
The Executive Council of Society farmed some rules and procedures for these awards. The Secretary invites the nominations in prescribed proforma from members of E.C Three members committee scrutinizes the nominations and decides the awardees.
The Society is happy to inform that the first Janaki Ammal Medal was given to Prof. R.E. Schultes of USA and first Harshberger Medal to Dr. S.K. Jain of India during the closing function of III ICE at Mexico on 14-11-1992. The Medal Awards of 1993 and 1994 were given during IV ICE in Lucknow.
